Default Thoughts on a Machine shops in the area?

What are some of the better (read: reliable, turnaround time and knowledgeable) machine shops in the area for 4663’s? By in the area I mean within 100-200 miles of Roanoke.

Also, I’ve never had anything done at a machine shop so what type of cost should I be looking at for cleaning, bore, hone(with torque plate), deck and any other little odds and ends.

Is it worth having a machine shop assemble your bottom end?

as far as specificly for 4G63's, none.

However Baldwins in Radford is good, I hear thier turnaround is typically a week or so.

Then you ahve Hi-Tech in Wytheville but are a bit slower than Baldwins becuase they are busier.

Until I am able to purchase my own valve grinder and seat kit I am senind my head to Baldwins. Said it would take a few days.

Otherwise if oyu need any valvetrain components installed I can do that here. I am currently installing new Brian Crower springs and retainers for a local customer. However my adapter for my spring compressor broke and the new one will be here tomorrow.

I take my stuff to Sheperds on Williamson in downtown roanoke. Never treated me bad and are very good at what they do.

Ive taken all of my Small Blocks to Sheppards to have them worked over,Talk to Richard down there.Theyre pretty reasonable on price and turnaround,if anything is wrong theyll do their best to make it right.Im sure theres someone within 200 miles that has alot more expierence with those engines though.

Adam at Pro Engines in Christiansburg did all the machine work for my 4g63 2.3L stroker motor, I'd definitely recommend him.

Marshall, what about assembly? is that something I can take on myself or should I have the shop do it?

Also what was the pricing on the machine work?

I did the assembly on that engine though Adam is very familiar with 4G's and would have no problem. Hard to say what the work cost, we did some friendly bartering to cover it.

I'd have to definately recommend against Adam. He did some work for my Dad on a BBC. Terrible. The bores were incorrectly cut, and had a huge scuff in one that was not removed.

Also the heads were bad as well. Every valve was at a diff seat height. Needless to say the motor did not last long before it was pulled out and done right.

Now his experience with the 4g might be diff story, but based on my experiences he does not put the time and attention to detail in that I would prefer someone do when playing with my money.
