Default Need some help..

I just picked up a Serialport-USB cable so that I could hook up my laptop to my car. I've already to the OBDII cable-Serial cable so everything hooked up.

I downloaded the tuning program from openecu.com (http://forums.openecu.org/viewtopic.php?t=246) and installed it on my laptop.

I hooked everything up, and ran the program, but my laptop wasnt picking up anything from my ECU. Am I doing this all wrong or what?

I have a CD with several different tuned maps i'd like to flash onto my ECU and see which one works best.

What am I doing wrong? Keep in mind I really dont know what im doing, just figured I would try to do it myself, but now its turning into a headache.

Any help?

Thanks

ditch that usb-serial cable. almost guranteed that you will have to run it serial to work, usb interfaces rarely work right to get everything going correctly.

sorry I haven't gotten a chance to come help you, I was hoping to this weekend but I have to go and help my parents.

Anyway, chances are you will have to look in the program options and be sure that it knows to use a usb cable. I use usb for the evo's and it works fine so long as the settings are correct.

wait just read it again..it looks like you just got a serial to usb adapter? Thats not going to work very well. My advice would be to look on tactrix.com and get the correct cable for your car, as your going to need to ground a pin on the other connector next to the usb in order to program the ecu neway.

I've ran serial to usb and just straight up usb... and I've ran serial alone.

I can take a look at it if you want... Might be able to get the usb->serial to function, but I do agree that you might want to consider getting the proper cable. They can typically be found awfully cheap.

agreed.serial to USB never worked on my AEM system.it can be a PITA finding a laptop that still has a serial port.some lower end new models do still have it.i ended up buying an older IBM Thinkpad for around $150 on Ebay to be my dedicated tuning computer.works great.

my IDS freaks the hell out when i use the USB cable on it, but with a network bridge on the LAN port, i can rock reprogramming all day long rock fucking solid.

i have AE and VAGCOM, both lock up an aweful lot in the middle of a large data graph. i fucking hate having to reboot a program midway in a diagnostic!

contrary to popular belief, VAG software does more than interface with lemmiwinks or whatever reflashing emulator you decide to use on them thar german things.

we do a shitton of TDI's, there is no way to reset the inj. pump timing correctly unless you use it.

we have quite a decent aresenal of OE level scan/diag equipment, the VAG-COM is just one of many in this redneck shop. IDS, TechII, AE, VAGCOM, Genysis, Vetronix 5200 scope, and PICO are just some of the shits we use on the daily.

also contrary to popular belief, there are more than just a few brands of cars in Floyd, and we work on them all.

I know how to use Vag-Com asswipe. It does a lot of great things.

...and I do have Lemmiwinks too, btw, but Lemmiwinks is a standalone program.

BSeries,
Its fine, just lemme know when you have some free time. I'll be gone this next week but i'll be back after that.

I'll look into tactrix.com, and if not there, I may just wait and see if what you have will work.

We'll see, and thanks for the comments guys. I returned the cable today and got my $45 back.
