Default Going back to school.

I love mY job at the moment, however I have come to realize that on my income there is no way I can support a family(and the chances of advancement at this place are not likely) so I am looking for a career.

I have always wanted to learn how to weld so I think I am going to head back to school to become certified in welding. Anyone know much about getting certified for welding? I know vwcc has a welding class but the class schedule majorly conflicts with my current work schedule and I can not just quit my job with a family to take care of while I am going to school. Perhaps someone else may know another alternative for some night classes? Or even someone that would pick me up for an internship would be greatly beneficial.

Any help or input is greatly appreciated.

awesome man

I have heard good things about welding classes at VWCC..

As a profession though, I just hope you don't die of lung cancer at 45 yrs old lol j/p..

seriously though, is wearing a respirator/etc a good idea when doing this all day long?

the welding classes at VWCC are held way out in trouteville neway...I was going to take them...but it costs more in gas to go out there and back then the class was worth to me.

A.R. Burton has welding classes that they offer, and they have evening Adult classes that begin at like 6pm or something, may be worth checking into...

You know, I really do not know. However I know plenty of guys at various muffler shops all over town and I have never heard of them having a problem, not to mention I do not know a single one that wears a respirator. The only form of protection they have is their welding mask. So you know that does not do much for their air.

I'm actually in troutville so that would not be bad if their schedule did not already conflict with my current work schedule.

Burton sounds like a good idea but I was thinking that was a technical school for high school students. I was unaware that they had classes for adults. Thanks for the input. I'll have to check them out.

Best of luck to you man.. I really wish the best for you and your girly (and your future new addition to the family). I'm sure you'll be a good dad, and that says a lot about you to step up and post a thread admitting that there is room for improvement in order to support a family. I'll keep my ears open, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to help you out much in that sort of field as far as career opportunities regarding welding.

PM me with a few minor details about what you make now and what you're looking to make and I'll talk to a friend of mine and see what he can offer. I do have a few good friends that run local area shops and they might be able to squeeze something out. You're a good guy, P Diddy... If I can help you, I will.

NRCC has a complete catalog of courses for welding. Of which I plan on trying to take a few this semester.
