You could also blame it on the crankwalk issues of the 7-bolt motors that plagued that year. I think this immediately brought negative attention to the 2g's but yet a small percentage of cars actually walked. And if they did, it wasn't necessarily a big deal because the owner was more than likely going to swap a 6-bolt in eventually anyway. Many do not realize that just about any motor can crankwalk if built improperly.

The Evo's are definitely better made, or at least better engineered is the way to put it. While the 1g motor is stout and is proven to make power, the new evo 7-bolt is very efficient. Stock turbo evo's easily making 400+whp is insane.
Stock vs stock yea, the Evo Head is WAY better than the old school DSM head. Also the stock Evo turbo is a badass turbo, and beats the shit out of even the Evo3 turbo that the DSM guys run. The biggest difference is in block structure (much better harmonics) and the much improved head.

There are other cars that crankwalk too, but it's been kept in the dark. Very familiar ricer favorites. Yes, the ricer beloved 2JZ has been known to crankwalk on a not so uncommon occasion, as has the SRT4 motor *gasp*.

I don't think you have to wait for SRT-4s to get old for people to start ghetto-ing them up. They started that immediately.

The biggest problem I see is all the tests always leave out details. I may be a little biased due to friendship but when I want to see results I can trust I usually check to see if AMS has tested what I'm looking at, they always seem to have the most honest tests. People testing stuff on adjustable dynos is another problem. 11 second cars on turbos that max in the 400 range dynoing 600+ is a bunch of bullshit all over Evo M. From my experience with the HTA86 it spools identical to the 850R and the standard 35R, but It doesn't seem to make more power unless you are running over 35 PSI. Right now I'd say the 850R is a better turbo, though I don't know if the HTA86 maxes out higher or what. I will hopefully have the 850R car on the dyno within a month or so for some good legit results.

Yeah I found that out quickly, funny how you never hear about that hardly at all however large pressure plate clutches on high mileage motors have been known to cause crank walk issues.

I would say a lot more "sexy" () I mean better looking... Take a look at an eclipse sometime, you'll see.
