Can anyone think of anything i can do while the heads already off (small things, nothing major anyway)
Get some specs on the valve shim clearance. Find a metric feeler gauge and check to see if the shims are within spec. Gotta do this when the cams are back on though! And make sure you put some oil on the shims and on the feeler gauge before sticking it between the cam lobes and the shims.

If your going to make this a daily driver and/or if you want maximum performance AND efficiency out of this head (especially since you are going to be boosting it!) I'd get this done. Those valve shims can be flipped over ONCE if they haven't been flipped over already, which is doubtful that this has happened being that most owners with these kind of heads never touch them when it comes to high mileage maintenance. Also check the shims for scratches and be sure not to scratch them when removing/replacing them. Use a pick tool with some electrical tape around the tip when removing them. You'll more than likely need some new shims though as the cam lobes will have worn beyond clearance of most of your existing shims. Find out the diameter of the shims. If they're 29mm I'll probably have a bunch here soon coming off my SHO (Yamaha) heads. I'd definitely get the clearances checked out though for what you plan on doing with this motor. No need to kill your cam lobes and possibly destroy the cams after all this engine work Ryan.

Also replace those valve stem seals if you haven't already. If the valves were removed when your heads were cleaned then you WILL need new seals.

Did Yamaha make your heads too? My two heads look very similar to your straight 6 head.

And stick a shop vac hose with a small nozzle on it in your cylinder walls and get that loose rust and dirt out of there. It really shouldn't hurt to leave it in there, but might as well clean it our as best as you can to be on the safe side. I wouldn't really worry about removing pistons to get it 100% clean though, it'll be just fine if you get rid of the loose stuff. Hope that helps!

-Your old buddy Andrew!

Hey andrew,

The head very well could have been made by yamaha, my old car the AE86 head was also manufactured by yamaha in the 80s so its very possible. The valves werent adjusted at the shop but they were inspected for any kinda of damage or improper "shimmage"/clearance. Now if i can just get a day or two at home ill put it back together and in the car.

Hmmm... well the only thing that I would think of to do then is take a Dremel to the intake and exhaust ports. Open them up a little more and smoothen out anything that you can. With a turbo on there you'll definitely get some benefits out of the head if you do that. Try to also port the intake manifold some and port match where it meets the head. Just make sure you're using a good fuel pump for all of this! 190lb/hr is probably the least that I would go with for your setup. So when do you expect to have her all together (the motor that is)? If you can use a hand then maybe I'll swing by one of these days that I'm off and check out this new beast and maybe help you drop the motor in. Do you already have all of your gaskets and seals?

i havent ordered my fuel pump yet but im probably just going to do the usual, walbro 255, as for the gaskets, i need to go to toyota and get all types of misc stuff, exhaust manifold bolts, turbo gasket, other misc bolts. Next weekend ill actually be in town and my GF is leaving town for the weekend, so if you arent busy i will definately be working on it, and you know you always have a place to stay/drink beer/etc
