almost any car has the potential to do well in an autox because it is largly driver. But (and yea, im biased ) a miata is a great platform. you can get an older model for fairly cheap. most important mods = suspension. upgrade your shocks, maybe lower a little bit with good springs, upgrade your sway bars, maybe some chasis braces. if your gunna do engine mods, make sure your have your powerband where you want it because you dont wanna keep shifting. but while that wil help, the best and easiest thing to improve is your driving. take schools, practice, learn your car, find the limits, walk the course as much as possible, just...get better obviosly your car is important and if you upgrade your car, you will do better. but experience and really trying to improve yourself will reap more benefits and better times.
MINIS are really good if you can afford em.

that was very well said... as a newB all of your money should go to schools and autox entry fees. Screw modding, there is ALWAYS room to improve yourself. Also dont go out there thinking that you are going to be the fastest and get cought up in the competition cause it can take the funnest out of it. Just go out have a good time, talk to people ( we are real nice and at least one person on here is at an event) and start the correct way by learning how to control a car. Good luck.

summary: just come out

yeah, what they said. dont be in competition with the other people, comete with yourself. try to improve your own skill and dont worry about anyone else. remember that youre there to have fun. to answere youre question; its mostly driver, but some cars that have good potential to go far with are ae86's, mr2s, miatas, 240's... i prefer small, lightweight, rwd cars.
