Default Auto-X

I have seen the many threads about auto-x circuits in va but my question is, are they good circuits? It's looking like im gonna end up being stationed back in HR and i feel kinda spoiled coming from socal where just about any backroad outside of san diego is practically an auto-x course! Any suggestions on circuits worth going to?

Thanks

Yes they're good. ACU-4 is hailed as one of the best autocross courses on the east coast. Langley is alot of fun going around the banked oval. I havent been to VMP yet, but I've heard their courses are huge and fast.

by circuits I assume you mean venues, since the course is differnet everytime unless you're talking about a road course like VIR

Correct! ACU-4 is great. Tidewater SCC puts on a pretty darn good event there. NASA Mid Atlantic does Langley Speedway, it's fun and we always try to set up a challenging course, but the walls scare away some of the more timid drivers. Va Motorsports Park is huge as well and they usually have long courses that are both technical and fast. Last event had some real quick sections.

If you don't mind driving 100-200 miles you can find an autocross most every weekend. Either north to the DC area, west for the Blue Ridge Region SCCA events or south for the Central Carolina Region or Tarheel SCC events. I've been running down to Charlotte, NC for the CCR events. They do a great job.
This weekend I'm heading down to Myrtle Beach for a South Carolina Region event. But I don't mind a 5+ hour drive for an event.

By the way, we have a great Mini group here, check out ww.hrmini.com

Autocross courses are made on any big paved surface (ACU-4, Langley, VMP, etc) with cones, and are different every time. They involve solo driving against the clock, usually slower than ~70mph.

Circuits are purpose built road course racetracks where many cars run at a time and top speeds can easily exceed ~130mph. The two nearest ones to HR are Summit Point Motorsports Park outside Winchester VA (http://www.summitpoint-raceway.com) and VIRginia International Raceway outside Danville VA (http://www.virclub.com)

A good "in between" event is Sun Feb 24 at VIR on the 1.1 mile infield Patriot Course. It's a school followed by a fast autocross:

Road course HPDE (driving school open to anyone, dozens of cars on track at a time, instructors provided for novices, passing only on the straightaways with a point-by, several 20-30min track sessions and classroom sessions a day) is usually around $350/weekend. Unfortunately, trucks sometimes aren't allowed.

The only "autocross type event" I know of on a road course is a NASA Circuitcross (fast autocross on a roadcourse w/school beforehand, one car at a time, no passing, no instructors.) This costs $105/day to enter (or $70 for just the afternoon timed runs not the morning school also.) There are two of these in '08 booked so far, Sun Feb 24 and Sun Jul 27 at VIR on the 1.1 mile infield Patriot Course. Details & pre-registration for Sun Feb 24 are here:

http://www.nasaproracing.com/nasa_ev.../?event_id=621

I'd have to check but your x runner is probably (hopefully) fine for one of those...
