Default Work truck messing up..

94 Ford E350 Box Truck

Runs okay int he morning. Always has a rough idle.

Now after about 2 hours it gets hot and starts idling rough and just shuts off at a stop light.

Turn it back on it..it hesitates and makes clunking noises when I give it gas for about 20 feet then turns off again.

Can come back to it about 4 to 5 hours later start it up and drive it away.

All gauges look fine and its not smoking from under the hood.

Obviously the heat is giving it problems but what is it giving problems too??

Thank you for any and all help!!

Sounds like my bike when the HG started to go. When it shuts off check the coolant resevoir to see if it's bubbling (leaking compression) If you're getting hot and leaking coolant into the cylinders it'll act just like that. Could probably be 800 other things too but it sounds exactly the same.

Are you saying it starts overheating?

Just be careful when you are dealing with coolant and hot engine.

No signs of overheating...such as smoking...temp gauge stays in the middle.

My initial reaction is that there is a sensor problem that is only manifesting during long term heat-soak. The ambient temp is probably just taking something way outside of its calibrated operating range, and aged sensors are most likely the culprit.

If it's a head gasket problem, it should start showing itself under a lot more conditions than the very specific ones you mentioned.

Almost sounds like a coil failure, but I'm still working through that one in my head.

Diesel or gas ? If diesel do you get any white smoke out of the tail pipe ? If gas you are possibly vaporlocking on cheap ethanol rich gasoline, my 94-96 Fords loved to do that when ambient temps go up.

its a gas engine...my other mechanic friend said that it might be the coil pack breaking up....I had a new ignition could put in less than 15,000 miles ago. I guess its worth replacing again to see.

I know that on some of the younger fords (probes specifically) the ignition control modules have a tendency to overheat. Not sure if your vehicle is one of these vehicles, but it's a shot in the dark. Worth checkIng.
