Is it ok to just weld the turbo to you header instead of getting a manifold? I have seen some people do it but would it be better just to buy the manifold?

uh.... you will need to do some major modification to the header in most cases to be able to do something like that... find a manifold..

i would get a manifold just for many reasons.
ease of installation.
cheap/homemade manifolds crack because of weight of turbo, poor metal quilty etc....
crapy welds could have small pieces that break off and damage the turbo.
it's money well spent.

you can use a stock cast iron manfold and modify it for a turbo manifold. Its not the ideal choice but it will work fine. I do not aggree with the above negative ideas towards it.

cheap or homemade manis cause problems because of the builder and lack of prep on the metal. I built a log manifold 2 years ago and just sold it a little bit ago. still looked good like the day i put it on actually.

I agree with Greaser, a well built homemade turbo manifold will work well, if you know the concepts behind building one and know what you're doing. However, even on home built manifolds, i don't think you should weld the turbo directly to it, this is only done on race cars running pretty high boost, and there is no need for it if you're running below 20-25 psi.
