Vtec in and out
Just swapped in a b16 into my crx. Everything works except for one thing. Vtec rarely kicks in and when it does it fades out and sometimes kicks back in. I've been told it may be a wiring issue, a bad ecu, or my speedo cable tranny connection. I've completely gone over the wiring over and over and it seems fine to me, grounds and everything. Bad ecu may explain it but i doubt its bad. Now the last possibility would be the speedo cable. That was really the biggest problem when i did the swap. My factory cable wouldnt fit in the new tranny because it came with an electrical unit. So we took the housing off the electrical one and put the mech. unit and elec. unit together. The speedo works fine now and never cuts out, but the cable is in there pretty loose.
I don't know about you guys but it's really frustrating. If I don't figure this out soon then I'll probably take it to tuners edge. But if anyone has any other idea's I'd appreciate it.

Speedo cable shouldn't matter, the ECU doesn't care about speed, just engine RPM, throttle position, etc. Look elsewhere for your problem. Make sure you have good grounds for everything, because the VTEC solenoid takes a bit of current to engage, and a bad ground may not allow this. Also, make sure any VTEC wiring you've added is big enough, probably 20 guage or bigger should be fine. Check all other swap wiring too, any signal that the ECU looks at for VTEC should be checked and double checked at any solder joints, etc. Of course, the solenoid could be messed up also, but I doubt it.
Oh yeah, oil pressure. Have to have that for VTEC engagement. Look there too.
