ok everybody so heres the deal, i picked up this type r block for cheap, and wanted to build it for boost, sleeves, pistons, rods etc. the only problem with it is is that someone fucked up the headstud holes, they heli-coiled the and torqued the fuck out of some of them. now ive heard i can re-drill it for 1/2 head studs or part it out. i can make my money back if i sell the pistons and rods. sooooooooooo here are some pics. let me know what you think, id really like to build this block

 

There is a Time-Sert kit that can repair that; it's specifically for repairing the studs the second time (Time-Sert says "for when the helicoils pull out" or something like that) but that would only make sense if you can find someone to do it for a decent price. If there are that many studs that are fucked, and you got the block for cheap, I don't know if I'd bother. You could argue both ways though, but I'd check to make sure that the repaired block was still cheaper than just buying a viable block with no stud damage from someone else. You don't want the repaired block to cost more than a good one obviously, it's false economy.

If you go the repair route, find a shop that is already equipped to do that. The inserts themselves aren't expensive but the cost of the whole kit with the tools will make your eyes water.

 

since your gonna build it let the machine shop worry about it.... just my 2 cents

 

yeah right. machine shops dont check for stripped head bolt holes.

listen to chris above. you can take it up to Abacus Racing (757-363-8878) and they can look at it for you. They're familiar with honda head stud repairs. If i remember, they MIGHT have both the standard 11mm kit and the oversize one to.

riiight. take a block to a machine shop to get bored, decked, and honed. if they charged you $35-50 to inspect the block without asking you and found nothing, would you pay them?

if its not on the invoice and agreed upon, they arent supposed to.

 

Yeah, the best you could hope for is that the shop would notice stripped stubs and tell you about it. They likely aren't going to go out of their way to look for them though.

 

mmmmm usually chasing the head bolts are part of the job. seeing how when you deck the block you get crap in the holes. if not it speaks bad on the machinist.....

you are paying for skill and attention to detail.... both essential to a good shop and machinist.

as i stated before i would just have the machine shop fix it since its going there anyways....

 

air hose + blow gun + bolt holes = empty bolt holes.
