Default Transmission/Clutch Question

I'm wondering if I have a transmission or clutch problem or both. Any help or input would be appreciated. Thanks.

The car is a 1992 Civic CX with 153,000 miles. When driving on the highway its sometimes pops out of 5th gear on its own, its not sudden, it just gets out of gear and I put it back in. When downshifting into 2nd it does this as well if I try to slow the car with a lower gear.

could be a few things...i would start by checking the pilot bushing.

could be worn gears/synchros like the one guy said...could also be a shift fork as well as a few other things.

best to just take it apart and inspect it...im sure you will find the problem that way.

If it is tough to get into gear and out of gear everytime it could be synchros. If it just pops out of gear it is usually a bent shift fork. It could also be both. I would have it rebuilt if you can't afford a new one.

In High school I had a '85 Ford Tempo that did the same thing. We fixed the problem after we went to a junk yard and replaced the shifter itself.

you are low on trans fluid fill it back up.
