Re: TPS Problem

TPS should be BELOW .5v at idle and sweep cleanly through full throttle and top out between 4 to 5 volts. Check your grounds and your connector pins. Just because you disconnect the MAF and it runs better, does not mean that sensor is faulty. It could just be throwing your computer in limp mode, or a base mode using your MAP sensor as back-up.

Is your check engine light on are any codes being set?

Also noted above-the MAP and TPS sensor plugs may be identical, and swapping them will give you the EXACT issue you are describing. Do yourself a quick favor and just try switching them around.

Try setting TPS at less than .5 volts (maybe .45). Also conform the pin on the ecm is receiving the same voltage (no shorted signal wire). Verify MAP sensor is working correctly, and look VERY closely at the pins on the connections to your TPS...and clean them as well (PB blaster and toothbrush ect...)

Re: TPS Problem

thx for all this great info, I was down a my mom's yesterday an started to work on it again. So this time I took all the wires out of the loom, (I guess that's what it's called) an follow all the wires from the tps sensor to the ecu, notice that the ground wire was a different green with no white strip. NEways everything was fine. So I went ahead an set the tps to .50 an check it a wot it was at 4.43 volts.

That's not the problem the problem now is when I test drive it the voltage seems to be changing, when i check the voltage it reads .54 volts. The screws are tight I mean really tight so now I'm wondering why is it moving or how. Please help.....

Thx vtecda9

Re: TPS Problem

If you're getting a different value when the engine is running and when it's not running, you're probably just getting a little bit of electrical noise on the signal. That's why you set the value when the engine is not running. The ECU does some filtering and averaging on the incoming signals, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

So then why is when I unhook the plug for the tps the car runs fine, but when i try to set the volts it runs like shit. Its a new sensor so would it have to be the wires..

Re: TPS Problem

it's also easy to install them upside down. trust me, it's happened.

there's only two steps here to diagnose the problem.

1. Verify there is 5V between the power and ground wires.
2. Verify there is ~0.5V between the signal and ground wire with the engine OFF and the throttle body closed (at idle)

Is either one of them is not correct, remove the sensor from the throttle body and check the mounting procedure. you should have to install it a little cock eyed, then turn slightly for the mounting holes to line up.

If your steps 1 & 2 check out ok, you'll need to trace out the wires back to the PCM.
