Default Temp. Gauge Fluctuating..

My engine temperature gauge suddenly climbed up from neutral to up past hot the other night, then it steadily dropped back to neutral, then it climbed back up over hot and now it is always past hot when the motor is running.

The engine is not overheating, I know that, so my guesses are bad thermostat or bad temperature sensor.

Thoughts?

my crx does this all the time...i hit the dash and it goes back down to normal...?

try that..?

but if that dosent work, then i would deff replace the thermostat first since it costs about 10$ for the whole job (anitfreeze and the thermostat), if that dosent work then fuckign take it to honda and let them fuck with it...

i dont like fuckign with sensors..and wiring and shit

You could just have a leak somewhere. Check all your hoses and all around your radiator and make sure everything's sealed up before you spend any money.

Try a gauge to make sure your temps are ok anyways. Last thing you would want is for your engine to fail and this could have been prevented.

My gauge used to stay in the nutural area and never move from there when warm. But on my log's they were climing as high as 230-240 while in boost. Turned out to be a hairline crack in all 4 sleeves. If this would have gone unnoticed from relying on a old OEM cluster I could have caused serious damage.

Good Luck, if anything you will have a gauge that works right

I had the exact same problem a few years ago. It was air trapped in the coolant system. I bleed it twice over three days, change nothing, and never had it again.

Yeah, that sounds like a bubble in the system, that was my first thought also.

i definately agree with the possibility of the bubble in the system. and if bleeding doesnt help, change the tstat.

All 3 of you were correct. I flushed the radiator and refilled it with new coolant and now the gauge remains at the neutral point. Of course, being the idiot that I am, I went and bought a new temp. sensor and thermostat and I really only needed to spend 10 bucks on coolant. Doh.
Thanks guys for the ideas.
