Post Piggy-back Poll

APEXi VTEC AFC II $230-$350

Harness $100-$140

The A'PEXi V-AFC II is a multi-function piggyback air/fuel and VTEC engagement controller designed for fine-tuning performance modifications. It features a user-definable, 12-point adjustable fuel curve that can be set in as small as 100 RPM increments. The broad range of fuel adjustment is +/- 50% at each of the 12 user-defined setting points. The fuel adjustment function considers wide/narrow throttle and low/high camshaft settings, from which four different fuel maps are created (wide-low, wide-high, narrow-low, narrow-high). The integrated VTEC Controller adjusts the point at which the engine switches from the Lo to Hi cam during acceleration, as well as when the engine switches from the Hi to Lo cam during deceleration. Perfectly suited for aftermarket camshafts that alter the powerband.

Safety features such as knocking level meter, engine caution warning, and password lock are new additions to the unit, and the deceleration air flow correction function is capable of curing the erratic idle and stall problems associated with open-atmosphere blow-off valves on hot-wire air-flow meter systems. The VAFC II is also capable of monitoring, recording, and replaying several important data channels in numerical, analog meter, and graph modes on its brilliant dot matrix vacuum fluorescent display. They include: intake manifold vacuum / boost pressure, air flow capacity, intake manifold pressure, Karmann frequency, engine RPM, throttle position, and air flow correction percentage.

GReddy E-Manage Engine Control Unit $280-$340

Harness <$100

The GReddy eManage programmable engine management unit allows sport compact enthusiasts to tune their performance setup to its maximum potential. Properly tune your factory fuel system your factory ECU and sensors. The GReddy eManage "piggy-back" engine management unit can adjust air/fuel ratios by altering the duty-cycle of factory fuel injectors by intercepting and altering airflow or MAP sensor signals. Honda tuners with VTEC cars can use the eManage to adjust their VTEC shift points as well.

The GReddy eManage has tons of functionality built-in but inaccessible without the use of a programmer. Additional features include a 16x16 airflow adjustment map, larger main injector correction adjustment, upgrade air flow meter adjustment, boost limiter cut, anti-engine stall, VTEC-fuel adjustment, real-time map trace, real-time display, real-time communication and basic Data-logging.

Sport Compact tuners can use a Windows PC computer based programming setup with the GReddy "eManage Support Tool" communication software to access these additional features. But if you want on-the-fly, in-vehicle tuning capabilities, the GReddy eManage E-01 Programmer is the way to go. The eManage E-01 Programmer comes with a fully integrated LCD screen with navigation system. Tuners can access all functionality of the eManage and store their favorite setups into presets to be retrieved when the time is right.

GReddy E-Manage Ultimate $500-$550

Harness <$100

In addition to standard e-manage airflow-based adjustments, the Ultimate version includes new and upgraded features. Included is a PC-based Ultimate Support Tool software CD, with an easy-to-use Parameter Set-up, tab menu format and speedy USB communication. Ultimate has improved direct Map control for adding and subtracting Fuel and Ignition. The ability to switch between 2 preset tuning Maps (i.e. Street or Race program) via externally mounted toggle switches. There are Maps for Individual cylinder adjustment for both Fuel and Ignition. There are also options to convert injection and ignition systems (i.e. group or sequential injection and group or individual fire ignition.) An Airflow Output Map option even allows for airflow meter elimination. And when used with a wideband A/F Meter, the Air Fuel Target Map can self-tune an Injector base tuning Map, to speed up initial tuning. There are also built-in Boost, Rev and Speed Limiter-Cut features. To create super smooth operation, there are various fine tuning Correction Maps to adjust for Throttle Acceleration, Vehicle Speed, Water Temp, Intake Temp, Auto Trans Shift, Anti Engine Stall, and Idle. To further aid in tuning, e-manage Ultimate's improved integrated Monitoring, Map Tracing and Datalogging features far exceed any other piggyback controller on the market. Even when not connected to the software, 8 channels of datalogging (at 20msec intervals) can be recorded and stored to be reviewed later. With the Support Tool connected, over 30 channels can be covered. Other new features include: Improved RPM recognition, Warning Settings, Password Protection for individual tuning Maps, NVCS (Nissan), VTEC (Honda), O2 Feed-back, Clean Fouled Plugs, and numerous others in future updates.

Import Tuner Review

Titan MotorSports

Overall:

APEXi - Simple; don't have to hack the wiring harness; inexpensive; simple tuning; NO wideband data-logging; limited options.

e-Manage - More complicated; PC software requires laptop to communicate via USB; $500 monitor for on the fly tuning; wide range of options and data-logging; hack wiring harness.

e-Manage Ultimate - Most expensive; requires $500 monitor for on the fly tuning; comprehensive computer programable tuning; most powerfull; hack wiring harness.
