Default Oil Question

The last time I changed my oil, I used 10w30 because there was like 10 quarts sitting in our garage. I just looked at the owner's manual and it says to use 5w20. This is a Civic.

Is 10w30 going to hurt anything? I haven't had any problems in the 600 miles since I put it in there, but if it could cause problems, i'm going to change it ASAP.

Thanks for any help...

im pretty sure youll be okay for the summer time seeing as its pretty hot outside, unless youre having problems starting up. some people recommend using a higher weight oil in the summer. but id wait for someone else to chime in on this one i dont want to be the sole contributor if your engine messes up

It should be fine. The 10 compared to 5 for sure is alright (even says something to that effect in most Nissan FSMs). Usually 5W oil is used when you're going to see sub-zero F temperatures. The 20 and 30 weight is were any problems would show up, since the 30 will be a little thicker. However, it's also quite hot recently so the fact that it's thicker will be offset some. That and oil thins out as it's used. If you were going to see any problems it would have been right after you put the oil in. I'd just keep going with the current oil and change on schedule.

10w30 should be fine in your Prelude. As for getting it done, I suggest that you do it yourself. It's not hard at all.

I use Castrol Syntec (Synthetic) 10W30 in my Integra. You could probably use Synthetic oil too if your mileage isn't that high and your motor is in good shape. If not, you can use the regular oil or High Mileage oil by Castrol or Mobil One. There are other good brands out there, but the ones I mentioned are what my dad, brothers, and I have used for like the past 7 years or so.

As for quantity, I'd say about 5 quarts. I know you will need at least 4 quarts in your H22, but get a 5th quart just to make sure.

You will also need to replace your oil filter. Just go to the parts store and there SHOULD be a book near where the filters are located. Find your car and find your filter.

If you change your oil regularly there is not much reason to use synthetic. Save your money and get dead animal oil. The filter you get is much MUCH more important than the oil you get.
