Oil light with SR20DET
Alirght changed oil as of today, and filter so i go to start car, the Oil light will blink for 10 seconds and then go away, been doin this since 10:30am is it ok?
K&N Oil Filter and redline 5w-30 synthetic oil, 4 quarts |
Re: Oil light with SR20DET
as long as you put the drain plug back in, it's ok.

Re: Oil light with SR20DET
The oil light being on for 10 seconds is way to long. If you don't like spun rod bearings, figure out whats wronge with it.

Re: Oil light with SR20DET
The oil light in the dash is usually just an idiot light, it receives an on or off signal from an oil pressure sending unit.
The way to really see if things are ok, is to hook up a oil pressure gauge/tester and check to see what its doing. If pressure is ok, more than likely its just the sending unit (they usually leak or give false readings like you described). |
Re: Oil light with SR20DET
it is kinda rare for an OPS to just shit out. check your oil pressure with a known good gauge before making any assumptions. since you said it flickers for a few seconds....i would say its safe to say that you may have an issue. whether you have a filter that is leaking down (due to no check valve) or too thin of an oil....there is prolly an issue.
check that shit before you go any farther....there may be an issue that will cause problems. |
Re: Oil light with SR20DET
well i will pay someone 45$ to find out whats wrong with it...

I'd also get a gauge to check your actual oil pressure. Again, do not drive the car at all until this is resolved. |
Re: Oil light with SR20DET
damn, i feel stupid for not seeing what kind of oil you put in... :(
5w30 synthetic? a little too thin if you ask me...especially if the engine has higher milage. 10w30 or a 10w40 is prolly a good idea. hell...may be like my metro and run two quarts of 20w50, a qt of 90w gear lube, and half qt of oil treatment :D it knocks a little.... ;) |

Re: Oil light with SR20DET
Keep in mind that a high grade $9+ oil filter will lower your oil pressure. There was some huge write-up on the internet about oil filters. The K&N seemed to be the best of both worlds ie. filtering power and flow numbers, but it still had a drop in pressure over your basic fram/factory filter.

Re: Oil light with SR20DET
well i drained the oil, and went to 15w-50 Mobil-1 red top, and Fram tough gaurd oil filter and the mofo light didnt even blink once

5W-30 or 10W-30 is preferable regardless of driving conditions. I'd suggest 10W-30. Unless it's going to be hot during the time after the oil change or you're going to drive it hard then go with 10W-40. |
