The oil light in the dash is usually just an idiot light, it receives an on or off signal from an oil pressure sending unit.
The way to really see if things are ok, is to hook up a oil pressure gauge/tester and check to see what its doing. If pressure is ok, more than likely its just the sending unit (they usually leak or give false readings like you described).

Re: Oil light with SR20DET
it is kinda rare for an OPS to just shit out. check your oil pressure with a known good gauge before making any assumptions. since you said it flickers for a few seconds....i would say its safe to say that you may have an issue. whether you have a filter that is leaking down (due to no check valve) or too thin of an oil....there is prolly an issue.
check that shit before you go any farther....there may be an issue that will cause problems.

I'd also get a gauge to check your actual oil pressure. Again, do not drive the car at all until this is resolved.
