RWD is so much fun to drive. It sucks ass in the snow, but at the same time its fun if you want to play. Be careful in the rain the first time you drive one.
Performance potential is good. SR20s are a great choice, and if you want to be slightly different, the KA supports forced induction pretty well. Greaser could tell you more about that tho, hes got a BAD 240 with a turbo KA

I had an '89 240 and drove the hell out of it. Yeah it sucks in the rain and snow, but it's a solid and reliable car that's fun to drive and damn good looking kitted or stock. There's a lot of options out there and with more options it's less expensive to mod it out. Go for it.
