Need some timing help on the 90 CRX
I have a 1990 Honda CRX DX and it just has the stock D15B2. I can't seem to get the timing right on it. Can someone please help me. On the crank pulley I have the TDC mark and then a fat red mark with 2 skinny white lines on either side. I am guessing those are the timing marks. The Haynes manual doesn't do a good job explaining. The car sounds nice and smooth and it revs nicely but the valves are pinging like crazy. The specs say 18 degrees +/- 2 degrees. From what?!?!? the Fat Red mark??? I have the little jumper inside the car in the passenger floor and everything. (don't see where it changes a damn thing...) Can anyone help me?!?! Thanks

Re: Need some timing help on the 90 CRX
If the car is running and you are using a timing light you want to set your timing on the red light. If you are setting timing with out the timing light. Set the crank on TDC, the single dash and set the cam gear with the arrow up and line the dashes on the sides of the cam gear up with the top on the head.

red line is wrong! the white line off by itself is the tdc mark. line that whit line up with the cut-out on the lower timing belt cover. if you look on the timing cover it is back near the water pump. then set the cam gear, it has up and 2 dash marks on opposite sides of each other. those lines also line up with part of th timing cover plastic it has little arrows on it, and up is up

if u dont have a lower timing cover take ur no 1 spark plug out, clean your oil dipstick and drop it in the hole and rotate the crank until the stick is at its highest point which will also result TDC. good luck

Use the red mark if the engine is running and you are using a timing light. Do not use your dipstick to set to TDC. You can still end up a tooth or 2 off. If you dont have your timing cover there is a mark on the oil pump also.

Re: Need some timing help on the 90 CRX
the motor is running. So the timing has to be almost right. The valves are just pinging like crazy. So i know the timing is off a little. I know that it calls for 18 +/- 2. So if the car is running. Do I need to set the 18 degress buy the TDC mark or the red line?
