You can run the car without the cover. I don't know that I would seeing as how rocks could get in there and get between the belt and the teeth and throw your timing waaaaay off, but trimming it definitely is possible.

its the same pump anyways. why change it? go to a parts store and look up the part numbers. no clue why its not fitting. i looked up a 2000 itr oil pump came up with the same part number as a 1998 CRV oil pump.

guys, please shutup if you dont know anything about his problem.

You need a lower cover to prevent crap from breaking your belt. Also, if you want to actually set your timing, you need that cover on there.

there are 2 covers that Honda B series use. one is very rounded on the bottom and only has 1 bolt on the bottom and the other has 2 bolts on the bottom and its more flat.

if you cannot get your cover on your new pump, i suggest comparing the 2 oil pumps to make sure they are are same where the cover bolts to. that sounds like its the problem.

if you can take pics of everything, i can tell you what the problem is.

not you, talking about the guys who just use their best judgement only and have nothing to go one.

you researched. and you are right, honda recently superceded all obd2 oil pumps to the same part. they used to be different (internal gear differences.)
