im gonna have to say fluid level but if its run too long on no fluid you may need a trans and if im not mistaken those only take like 3 qts of honda atf

Do you have a "Check Engine" light on? If so get a code reader and pull the code. This is where to start. If you don't have a code reader go by a Autozone store. I think they still read your codes for free. Being stuck in second gear is a "Fail Safe" mode that several manufacturers utilize, just to get you home in case of a failure. I'm not sure if your CRV has this feature. But start with a code and we can go from there... Also can you shift the car manualy? For instance put it in low gear start moving, shift to second, the car shifts, than shift to third, once again the car shifts etc. etc?.....

When I worked for Honda, I had that issue a couple of times. They ended up needing a new PCM. I'm not saying that is what is wrong with yours, just sharing some experiences that I have had.
