Re: Ls/Vtec vs poor man's type R
if you can afford to buy a b16 head to put on a gsr block you might as well just get the gsr head to match it instead of intentionally lowering your compression for wider IM choice.
on the other hand, a strong ls/vtec setup can be pretty easy and not too expensive to put together. lots of good threads in the all motor forum on honda-tech cover these builds.

Re: Ls/Vtec vs poor man's type R
My ls/vtec ran really strong for all motor. Had about 11.5:1 compression. I used p30 pistons on ls rods. One thing you must do is upgrade the oil pump. The ls pump seemed to be not getting enough oil to the head, causing a slight valve tick under idle. But I could have had a bad oil pump also.
I was impressed by the motor for awhile, I've rode, drove motors in civics from h22, b16, ls, itr, gsr, ls/vtec and the ls/vtec motor pulled the hardest. All of these motors used stock oem parts.
All motor is fun for awhile, throw some nitrous on it and you can have fun, but I personally lean towards the boosted motors for Honda's , I won't ever build another n/a motor.

i had a poor mans for the last 3 weeks and i can say i noticed a incrediable diffrence over my previous b16 mid range to top end was alot more and provided good power.
i didnt get a chance to race to many cars but i did put 6 cars atleast on a 1.8t jetta and 3 cars on a 1970 challanger from 60-120
