First you need to map out a budget and decide your goals for the car...then come back and ask where to start.

Exactly, you need to decide what you want out of your car.

Do you want a nice daily driveable street car?
A show car?
A drag car?
An autocross car?

Once you've determined what you want to do with your car it will be much easier for you to map out your plans for future modifications.

edit: also, because this is your first post - Welcome to dragVA!

the guys above have the right idea. you need to figure out what you want from the car.

1st and foremost to always remember is TUNING is key. You can have all the best stuff in the world and w/out proper tuning the car will be an unreliable turd.

from all the vw enthusiasts i know say that the 1.8t has alot less potential for tuning than the vr6, but this was before the 2.0t, they all started by just getting a new cone air filter, so i guess this is where a good place to start?
