i cant open my doors from the outside.....help!

so heres the deal, i got a 98 mitsubishi eclipse and the door handels are broken from the outside. the guy i got the car from put in some system to where everytime you shut the doors the lock automaticly.
i ripped the door panel off the driver side and was lookin around and saw that when i try and open the door from the outside, the little metal bar that goes into the little white plastic box still moves up and down but the door will not open. i dont think i need a new handle but i do think i need somthing thats inside the little box, i have no idea what it could be... any sugestions on what i need to fix it and how?

the door handles on the 2nd generation dsm's are the shittiest in the entire car world. i had the same problem that your talking about and i just replaced the whole door handle and it fixed it.
not sure about the door locking mechanism mod your talking about, but check either dsmtalk.com, dsmtuners.com or vfaq.com. All are dsm forums that can help you out on this kind of stuff more than this site. id recomend getting a child old enough to help but with small enough hands to get into the tight door space. i know how to do this with my eyes closed now, so i would help you but your too far away. goodluck, your gonna need it
*edit*- this is such a common problem both autozone and advance keep the door handles in stock. there like 18 bucks. if they dont have them, try kragen or ebay. also, there used to be a guy that invented a fix to the breaking. he sold metal reinforcement rods that would replace the plastic parts, but i dont believe he makes them anymore but its worth it to look around the web for the kits
