can i use a 1 gen b16 head and put it on my 96 ls block for ls/vtec

I am under the assumption that it works and is the thing to do over the gsr head - just because the b16 head flows much better and is really really close to the type r head.

Yes it will work. The gsr head will yield a slightly higher static compression ration though.
