Hardwiring GPS/ other 12v goodies.
Allright, I'm hardwiring all my stuff, and have just one question. My GPS cord has 3 wires (black, red, green). What is the green wire for?
thats the horny wire,like M&Ms...
black-ground
red-constant make sure you have a fuse, that way if something goes wrong with your setup it wont fuck up the GPS
green-horny..jk, i dont know exactly but i believe its the accessory try just the red and black connected, then add the green if necessary

Again, what model GPS?
Did you have a fuse on the green wire when you connected it to switch +12V?
edit: The only other scenario I can think of is red = Switch +12V, black = ground, and green is a NMEA data string output.... but that is a serial connection and should require two wires.

This was just clipped from the cigarette plug, no funny business wires.
could have fried the unit... =( Always have a fuse on a hot lead.
Sounds like the GPS cigarette plug had a voltage regulator that knocked the voltage on the green wire down to 5V or something like that.
It would be a good idea to splice it back together as original, and hardwire in a hidden standard 12V socket (can be found at radio shack). (Don't forget to fuse the hot lead on the socket.) As a side bonus, you would still have portability if needed.
