you can try replacing the tranny fluid with gm syncromesh FM first. i've heard several first hand accounts of it staving off a rebuild for a year or so. $11/qt at any gm service dept.

or you can get penzoil synchromesh which is exactly the same thing for cheaper. i think you can get it at autozone.
