just recently purchased a 1999 civic si. it sounds like something is grinding on the rear brake rotor. its a metal grinding on metal noise. just wondering if anyone had any input before i take the wheel off and tear everything apart. thanks in advance.

 

You should be able to check the thickness of the pads with just the wheel off.

Is the noise all the time or only when you're braking?

 

Don't know much about Civic's, but a lot of cars have a metal dust shield behind the rotor. That could be bent against the rotor causing your noise. I would check the pads too before you need new rotors.

 

Most likely the rear brake pad squealer, as mentioned.

 

Could be a little rock trapped in the shield too. But yes, does it do it all the time or just under braking?

well, i didnt discover what the grinding is, however, i did discover that the bolt that holds the bottom of my coilover on to the control arm isnt there any more. the fork is basically resting on the control arm. perfect.

umm yea it might be the dust shield rubbing against ur rotor......happened to me once and i jus bent it back, or jus cut it off......lol

 

or it is the rear hub thy make noises like that too when they are bad.

 

this is what greeted me when i jacked the car up and removed the wheel.
