Default going for a bigger turbo setup, need some thoughts!

I boosted my d16 before off stock internals and ran 5psi to 7, and it was alright. I sold that kit and want to move up. I want to build my d16 to withstand more boost as in the 10-15psi range. Im deffently getting some strong rods installed but I need to know what else i need to do to make sure my motor wont blow and what i need to do for the most power. Im thinking a t3 will spool up nice but I wouldnt be sure what my best bet would be for my plans. please throw out tips on what you know or have done to build boosted sohc motors. thanks, dave

a few grand total, im upgrading to a stage 2 clutch so that will set me back 200, i know the rods will cost me near the same amount. and for the kit Im thinking 1300 for a nice solid kit.plus whatever other items I might need, but not sure exactly what else.

if you're doing the rods you'll need new pistons, which will run you maybe $400-$500 new. machine work (bore/hone) $200, and new rod bearings, $100-$150. while you're at it do arp head studs, about $100-$150. for the block alone i would budget yourself $1500 to do it right (timing belt, head gasket, oil/coolant, possibly a new water pump and oil pump). that's assuming you do the labor yourself.
$1300 seems a little low to get a solid turbo kit. with that money you might be able to swing a turbo, wastegate, manifold, and a cheap intercooler.
also, to run more boost you'll want something other than just an afc and injectors, which are only good for maybe 12psi max.
i figgured out on my own that a good solid sohc turbo setup would be around $5000 if you shop around and do everything properly.

well I might go with the 12 psi then, spending more then the cars worth would be a stupid move on my part since I dont plan on having the car by next fall, i just want to get my car out of stock mode again but I think I might have to do this cheaper then the higher boost i had wanted. 5 grand is a lot of money. last kit i had was $800 and i ran 5-7pounds. Well thanks for the imput, somewhat dissapointing since I dont have that kind of cash. I guess Im going to try and manage stock inernals again with better fuel management this time and a better turbo. and go for my under $1500 project lol

if you dont plan on keeping the car, then get a drag kit, brand new there only running around 2800 bucks and you can find used ones for a whole lot cheaper than that, and with some new internals and injectors, thats good for at least 15 psi, youll make some great power in the sohc if you have hondata or uberdata, but my afc worked great in my car and i was running 14psi everyday, afc's do have there limits but its not really the fuel management that limits the boost amount, cause people run massive amounts of boost with afc's,its the fuel system(injectors, pump) the motor and the turbo capability, you could do this for about 5k dollars prolly less, especially if you shop around, and you would have a pretty damn fun car.....and labor is where you run into expense, i do all my own work and build my own motors so i save a ton in that aspect......

dude keep your original setup if you don't plan on keeping the car.. talk about a waste of money... what are you using for fuel management? get a t3 super 60..

old setup was just sold. i was using a safc and bigger injectors before. I do my own labor as long as its not putting internals into a block since i dont have anyway to use the proper machinery. that 14psi you were running as a daily sounds like fun so I think that will be my goal. I thought 7 pounds was fun but 14 would be awesome. I did crank my old setup to 10 - 12psi a few times and the car was really nice but i knew the 14b wasnt going to last much more so I figured upgrade time. my old setup was just a hf mani, 14b, 2.5 inch dp, homemade innercooler piping with starion front mount, hks ssq bov "which i loved and will try and buy again", 540 injectors, and safc.it looked like crap with the dirty turbo and the homemade piping so my new setup will be a lot cleaner. thanks for inputs and would like to hear more if there is some.

this is kind of pointless to get into but heres my .02

to build a motor figure on at least 1500-2000 grande in the short block if you do most of the assembly work yourself. a decent set of pistons and rods will be in the 800 or more range. by the time you get the block bored, honed, decked, cleaned, pistons put on the rods, the rings file fit and put on pistons, rotating assembly inspected cleaned and assembled. you can guarantee youll have 500 in machine shop costs, not to mention rod and main bearings. clevite 77's here can save some money as opposed to factory ones, though honda bearings are better . id like to point out i never mention doing anything to the head here, which is a MAJOR setback to the d's making power.... all porting aside figure at least 200 or so for a valve job and new valve stem seals.

now comes the turbo kit, oh yeah and you need fuel management like hondata and a fuel system ie injectors pump etc etc

lotta shit there.... OR for about the same dough u could swap a b motor in there, turbo it at about 10 psi and make a shitload more power than that built d series.

could drop a prelude in there too... but now we are gettin way off course.

bottom line d series motors suck, and i didnt even mention putting some sleeves in the block. long story short its not really worth putting that kinda money into a d bottom end, build the b and save your pennies for the day u blow it up... which can be prevented or at least delayed with proper tuning

there are several D series motors out there making over 350-400 whp on pump gas, and well in the 500's on race gas.. don't underestimate the motor!

please just use decent management.. aka uberdata.. just get a t3 super60 and tune it WELL and see how much the engine can handle.. if you blow it, big deal, pick up another d series longblock for like $250, and you will know your limit lol.. or you could just build the new one..
