Default exhaust question

i have a 94 hatch with a stock exhaust. the damn muffler tip fell off or something when the previous owner had it. it was loud as a bitch so i got an axle back from someone on the board to fix that but it is still loud as a bitch but its kinda weird. when i give it a lot of gas its not loud but when i downshift and it starts slowing down like 2500 to 3000 it sounds like a pair of 15" subs in the back, i mean this shit is loud. a straight bass sound.

I was thinking the same thing. it's more than likely the muffler you installed on the car making the deep tone. It is resonating. If you had an exhaust leak before and the only problem you saw was the tailpipe falling off, that wasn't your problem. The pipe after the muffler will not make a large impact on sound at all. I would put the car in the air and look over the entire exhaust system again.
