Default dohc zc cylinder head messed?

Hey guys, I was wondering if there is anyway to tell if it's just the head that is messed up, or could it be the bottom end aswell. I have an awful noise coming from the engine. I was wondering if anyone is able to help me out, and let me know if there is a way to check the head or whatever before taking it off.

a semple quick way to tell is by taking a long metal socket extention put your hand on one end and put your ear to it. put the other end either on the valve cover or the lower part of the block. The area that has the sound the loudest usually means that is where the problem is.

I know it sounds stupid but it is a easy way to find out
