Chip for Expedition 5.4L ???
Guy at work is buying a used Ford Expedition 5.4L (not diesel) and I mentioned that a chip would give him better gas mileage. He is looking for two settings -- fuel economy and another for light towing. Any recommendations?
Was thinking a Superchips MAX MicroTuner setup.
Just wondering if anyone had experience or opinions on chips for Expeditions.

Just put one on a F150 5.4, it really woke it up. Website shows $499.99 retail, but you can get them in the $380-390 range.

i dont reccommend it. at all. especially if its an 05 or newer three valve.
sure, it may run a wee bit better, but i doubt the fuel economy will improve. the 5.4 is stout enough as it is, if you need more to pull a trailer, you need a diesel.
i would take the money he would spend on a programmer, and set it aside for a timesert repair that will probly be needed when a spark plug blows out of the head, they are notorious for it. we do many.

I can tune it with a SCT XCal 2. I've done several before and to be perfectly honest I've had mixed results with who got better gas mileage and who got the same. I beleive it has a lot to do with your driving style. If you are on the highway, you will get better gas mileage.
at least its not as bad as the 3 valve 5.4's. doing a set of plugs on them usually involves the porcelain breaking out and leaving the shell in the head. there are quite a few shops that will pull the head to have it fixed. Rotunda has a service kit to pull them if that happens, but there are tricks to pulling the plugs so that dont happen.
