I have an 88 DX. It idles fine, but if I try to rev it over 3500, it starts cutting out. The check engine light goes off and on. I put a new coil, cap,rotor, and wires on it. Anyone have a clue what else could be wrong?
If so, please let me know before I blow this thing up.

your in limp mode.

pay attention to the cel next time...post back how many times it blinks and you can find out what code it is that is causing your problem.

 

you need to post back with exactly how many long blinks, and exactly how many short blinks for this to work....forgot to mention that.

 

same thing happens to me. i drive a e30 325i and mine cuts off at 5 for some reason but its extremely frustrating. i feel your pain man. this little problem has contributed to many embarresing outcomes.

 

I hate to sound stupid but what do you mean by cel? Is that the red light on the ECU?

The light doesn't blink, it ran at an idle this morning and didn't come on until i got it up to about 4000 rpm then the light came on then it died ( NO FIRE ) then it started again after about 1 minute. It only dies when the engine is warm, but the cel only comes on above 3500-4000.

 

Could my O2 sensor be bad?

 

tps does it only happen whenu put tit ot the floor but works fine at half throttle? if so tps i would also check the ecu for blinks a long blink counts for 10 a short blink counts for 1 u will know the difference if u have both

 

It cuts out at half and full throttle like it has a rev limiter. You can hold it to the floor and it absolutely will not rev over 3500 rpm and it is blowing black shit out of the tailpipe. I'm sick of F@#*in with the stupid piece of shit
