Default cant get my motor timed for shit

ok took the timing belt off and aligned cam up mark up and put crank pulley at tdc everything lines up perfectly with that. but the problem is when we go to check his timing the three marks are not were there suppose to be, there like a inch away from the pointer on the timing belt cover towards the firewall with the dizzy all the way forward towards the bumper. i now something is still not right anyone got any suggestions on what im doing wrong. is there something special you have to do on the y8 i know on the a6 you have to put the cam gear one tooth off for it be right. is there anything special like that that i have to do

Jumper service connector if you haven't already. Also, you may just be a tooth off. Did you remove the valve cover when you set the cams?

When you go to tension the belt its probably moving, changing the timing setting. Single cams can be a pain to time up.

Ok..

You are not supposed to set your cam timing based on the "three marks" of the crank pulley. Those are only ignition timing marks. For timing lights without an "advance" feature.

If you look past those three marks, there is a single mark. That single mark represents "0" or TDC. Set your cam timing at that mark. Also, be careful about the tensioner, it tends to be tricky sometimes because the tensioner sometimes will pull your belt off a tooth. Set your distriburtor in the center of its adjustment for now.

Do a compression test and re-check if your cam timing is correct.

If your compression is LESS than 15% different between any two cylinders you can rule out bent valves or broken ring-lands.

If your compression is good check for spark at the plug.

If you have spark at the plug, then you do not have fuel because as we all know if you have fuel, spark, compression, and timing you will have combustion.

If you are in Va Beach I can help you get it set... PM me.
