Default a beater old ass civic

i found this old ass civic (i believe 89-91) for 275$ its got 168K miles on it and i was thining about gettin it 4 a beater while i put m motor in over christmas......sooo i was wondring on some tips/pointers on what to look 4 while driving.......noises/feelings??? and what to look 4 under the hood...? it would be appreciated........

check cv axles to see if boots are broken (axles will click or car may shake under acceleration), check tie rod ends, check tires for excessive wear, push down on the front/back of the car and see how much it bounces (if it bounces up and down several times the struts are bad), check for exhaust leaks, and obviously if the car stumbles or bogs or has a hell of a time starting you might want to have it checked out before you buy it by a mechanic to make sure the motor isn't on it's way out.

well it turns out that it needs a new dizzy and has no reverse....LOL i guess thats not a good beater...
