** update** 4/25/11
It's been a while since I posted this but I found what the issue was. The guy who I had degree in my cams did not time the motor right. He was 2 teeth off and instead of retiming the car he chased the time by retarding the intake cam to 7 degrees and advancing the exhaust 2. After redoing this and retuning it, the dyno numbers are better. I made 185 whp and 145 tq. (I found it funny to be exactly to the number of my prediction of 185)


I know you can't tell how much horse an engine will make without a dyno, but I had my car on a dyno and i was shocked at the results. Here is what I have, tell me if it should have made 142hp i was hoping VERY BEST at 185 but more than 160.

Stock head? I'm not sure how much power you're expecting out of that engine without a head swap.

^just saw the part about the head as well. having a built bottom end with external goodies means nil since all the power is made in the head and in the ability to rev (with hondas atleast). you also have to figure that unless that b20 was freshly rebuilt it has no where near the 146hp rated at the crank that it came with, which if you take into account the ~15% power loss from crank to tires is only ~124whp. that 124 is assuming the motor is 100% fresh, not pulled from a running crv and put into an integra/civic. you should easily have matching tq numbers and if you were to bet some really lumpy all motor cams, or a simple vtec head, you should be able to pick up that ~30hp youre seeking.

yes it's the b20 head with the crower cams and springs and retainers

the engine is fresh, I rebuilt the whole thing. rings, bearings, gaskets, ITR oil pump and water pump, tensioner pulley ect. everthing but crank rods and some bolts. I swapped in the stage 2 crower 403s with the dual springs and retainers. crower says they add between 15 and 18 hp.

Unless you have some head work done to flow better, just adding cams isn't going to do much though. You can change duration, lift, etc., all you want, but if you have a crappy head that is restricting airflow then you're going to be somewhat handicapped no matter what. That's why VTEC heads are such a good option; they flow a lot better than the non-VTEC heads.

my b20b made 110hp 108tq to the wheels with intake, exhaust, and fpr. So those arent horrible numbers. Keep in mind i was using a mustang dyno...ugh

so if air flow is my problem, would I see great (10-15whp) from a good p&p or is vtec really the best way to day. I have been trying to stay away vtec, but it really limiting me i'll save and build a b16 head.
