Default Assistance with rims and tires

So my del sol has some damaged rims and i was recommended to purchase some new. I found some rims that i find appealing, but i was wondering which tires to get. Obviously you are all aware of the area we live in, i am next to DC and the roads suck. So i dont want to f up some new rims.

Should i get thicker tires, because right now i have low profiles?

I was going for 16,17 inch rims. I am at stock height right now, maybe in a yr or 2 i will lower the car with air.
