make sure the #1 cylinder is Top Dead Center (TDC). pull the spark plug and put a long screwdriver in the cylinder until it hits the top of the piston. see where it is. either crank it until it's at the top (that can take some time), or just put it in gear and roll the car slowly until it's at TDC. put dizzy back in.

do you have a BGB? if not, GET ONE!!! haynes/chilton's books suck balls! i wouldn't use a long screwdriver unless you cover it with tape. the cylinder walls, the threads on the spark plug holes, all of those types of things could get scarred or what have you. i like to use a nice wood dowel (which you can get at any hardware store) if you don't know how to set TDC otherwise. check your timing belt and make sure that your belt timing is on the money. you should also check your fusible link just in case.

underdrive pulley?!?!?
there's a knock mark in the general vicinity of the crank/oil pump and the timing belt gear.
