alcohol injection with safeguards!!!! LOOK!!!!
Trouble Free Water/Alcohol injection!!!
I cant believe I hadn’t thought of this earlier. I just figured out how to insert safty guards into the whole water/alchy injection scheme. I currently have a 10psi tial wg and am non intercooled. Since I have installed the turbo I haven’t been able to full boost or full RPM. I don’t want to kill a ring land with too much non intercooled boost. Here are some problems I’ve been nitpicking over…..
If under 10psi full boost what happens if :::::
IF the alcohol runs out? Then I’m at 10psi with hot turbo outlet temps that may preignite 93 octane pee water. POP goes the top ring lands of my very touchy KA24DE
IF the pump fails. Same condition as above.
IF there are deposits somewhere in the inlet of the pump. Same conditions as above
All of these IF’s spell disaster. Something I’m not going to have SO…………heres my solutions.
Get a 5psi spring from tial. This allows me to run a safe level of boost should something go wrong. And bump up to 10psi should all conditions for power be met. Next I get a SMC enterprises Alcohol injection system. The beauty of this kit is that it includes a Low Level warning light and a PUMP ON light. But the really cool techy thing about the pump on light is that its fed by a pressure switch in the line to the brass fitting. So if the pump is turning and no pressure, then no light. But if there is pressure in the line, the PUMP ON light is powered. Dope. Next I get a dual stage TURBO XS boost controller. The one that is cockpit controlling two preset boost levels. And guess what? Its 2nd stage of boost is controlled by a power switch. This means I can hack it and make it work as a safeguard. Heres how.
The PUMP ON light is powered by 12 volts from the pressure switch in the alchy line. If this light turns on, it powers a relay that I wire up to power the 2nd stage of the boost controller. So if that light turns on, this means I have alcohol being injected and its safe to raise boost, this triggers the relay to bump up the boost on the turbo xs Boost controller. NOW guess what happens if the pump fails, water is low, or other issues? No pressure in the output line of the injection kit, so the PUMP ON light doesn’t light, the relay doesn’t get powered, the turbo xs boost controller doesn’t raise boost. Result is 5psi. and a safe boost level should something fail.
Safeguard effectively installed!!!!!

Went to the web sight and I think I will buy this kit too. Too bad they dont have a 1 gal JUG. I wonder how long the 1/2 gal usually lasts? I like the idea of it turning on at a set boost level.
Where can you get the denatured alcohol and how much does it cost?

The only problem I see is if the injector or some part of the line gets clogged, kinked, etc. In that scenario you have pressure in the line but no (or not enough) alcohol being injected. Pop goes the motor o_O
I would wire up an EGT and use that in conjunction with the pressure signal to determine if boost should be turned on. This way if something happens and EGTs start to rise above a certain temp boost will be cut.
I'm not sure if there are any other signals that should be monitored in order to determine if safe conditions are met in order for the alcohol to be injected.
