Default air fuel gauge--o2 sensor help

I went to help my freind my install a air fuel gauge. after contecing the red to pos. and grounding the black wire, hooked the purple to the wire coming fromt he o2 sensor the gauge just read full rich. The wire was spliced togeher and when we pinched the wires the gauge moved but when we let it go the gauge went to rich. I then hooked the wire difrectly to the o2 sensor still read full rich. The car is a 1987 civic 3 door running a ZC with MSD SCI igntion. Any help would be appricated!

are the o2 sensors new? sometimes the a/f gauges will read funky if the o2 sensor is bad...but thats only if you KNOW you hooked everything up right and it still is giving you bad readings...

the gauge will read full rich untill the motor warms up. let it run for a few minutes(about 5 )
should be fine as long as it's hooked up right
