Default 99 GSR v-tec cross over then un cross issue?

Hey guys, I'm running a 99GSR.

Skunk 2 intake manifold.

At 4.8k RPMs secondaries open up in the intake.

Around 5.8k V-tec crosses over, and then will "deactivate" for lack of a better word, cutting off and back on and off and back on. It does this in all gears, but it doesn't do it every single time. Maybe every 1 out of 3 times it will. Now when this happens the secondaries close up too I think. I'm not confirmed for that. But it sounds like it.

I checked out to see if my oil was low, it seems fine. I've had the oil changed less then 2k miles ago.

Any suggestions? I'm thinking about trying to spark plugs and wires, just as a regular tune up to see if it fixes it.

I think you follow my posts on this forum.

But thanks, I hadn't thought about either yet. I'm gunna check that out right now.

Also, if either of those were actually bad. Wouldn't it completely not cross over? Not cross and un cross like I'm having?

Check your Vtec Fluid, its probably low.

No but real talk it sounds like the pressure switch is going out. Replace the switch and solenoid like Nunyabidness said. Check the wiring connections for them all the way back to the ecu. Also make sure the engine is warmed up to operating temp.

You don't need to worry about the plugs and wires. The ECU doesn't care about that stuff, it only cares about whether you're above the correct RPM and that the other conditions are met (like the VTEC pressure switch). It's more likely that the switch is faulty, or that the solenoid is faulty, or that you actually have oil pressure which is right on the threshold pressure of the switch.

Thank you all. I checked the solenoid and the pressure switch, visibly both look old and worn. All connections wiring seem to be correct, although one wire appears to have been soldered awhile ago and looks flimsy, but still connected. As for making sure the car is warmed up, it's a thing I've always done. No problems there. I'm going to switch my pressure switch and solenoid.

Where is there a good HONDA shop around Fredericksburg?

Thanks all.

i thought that vtec was at 4.8(rpm and iab engagement was at 5.8)rmp.....and if you have a s2 intake mani you no longer have the iab's...i have a stock gsr in a 94 hatch and when i "deleted" the iab's vtec was most deffinatly hitting at 4800...if you are running the stock p72 with the s2 IM id say your problem is the ecu reading off...

Did you look to see if the screen in the solenoid is clogged?

I haven't. I hadn't had time to check anything but a quick visual peek at them both. I will look into this one though. How does one go about unclogging if it were to be clogged?

Clean it with brake cleaner. Just like the iacv. Replace the rubber gasket and install. Its just a wire mesh screen that gets clogged with oil gunk. No biggy if its clogged. Easy repair.
