I don't think your heater core is the problem, that has nothing to do with the cooling process unless its leaking, you can yank the heater core out and plug the house and it still wouldn't over heat. Check the water pump and thermostat. I don't think fluid is a problem either, being half full should have given you some time before over heating, but you said it quickly overheated right? I'd check the thermo and water pump first, it could be something more severe but I would check the simple things first.

if the heater core is leaking it will probly smell like antifreaze when you have your heater on, but, i agree with him^, check you thermostat, water pump, and make sure your radiator is flowing.

I replaced this and I bought some coolant from advance that says it mixes with any color. Anyway, I filled up coolant from the resivoir until it was halfway full. I turned on the car and checked the level of antifreeze again. It was still half full. I took it for a test run. I took it less than a quarter mile before the temp gauge got close to the red. I shut it off quick and pushed it back to my house. I am stumped. A hissing noise was coming from around the hose area and when I unsrewed the part that connected the hose I could tell there was pressure from steam. I know the motor is still good. Did I do something wrong- Everything was fine until the hose broke and I tryed to replace it.

i fixed the thermostat all by myself!!! this seems to have fixed the problem. Before the upper radiator hose wasnt getting warm and now it is and the vehicle is staying at 215 degrees which is where is was at before. the heat works since i replaced the hose and everything is fine. Thanks a lot everybody!!! I love DragVA!!!
