Default do you think this is "ok" to do....

hey all,

some of you know that i got a JDM(yes, overnight from japan) type s prelude strut bar....

the type s strut bar does NOT use the 3 existing shock bolts to be mounted. the 5th gen prelude comes with 2 ADDITIONAL holes on each side right by the shock mount. these 2 holes are DESIGNATED for the type s strut bar. here is the pic below.

now, you can see that these holes are partially blocked by the top part of the shock assembly. so there is no way i can put the bolt through (bolts are oem honda parts that came with the strut bar).

here is the pic from the bottom. you can see clearly see the hole from this view.

now, here is my question to you. can i GRIND and/or DRILL the THING(i am not sure what that part is called but i have outlined it RED for your viewing ease) so i can put the bolt through? i dont think it really matters... not like it's supporting anything.... nor even if i grind/drill through, i dont think it will weaken the structural integrity.

it is indeed metal... if it was rubber, i would have simply tucked it aside.

So.... what do you think?

yes, i do realize it's too much of work for a stinkin' strut bar but i want it on there :P

here's a pic of how it should look like afterwards.

jdm strut bars suck!!! oh wait... i have a jdm stb... hehe. it looks like you should ok to drill through it. technically, wouldn't regular jdm shock's strut mount be shorter? so there should be enough support for the strut or whatever. it seems like it's ok though. just my 2 cents.

Why not just get the JDM upper seat and be done with it?

It should have the notches in it to accomodate the bolts. At least you'd think it would

u should be fine steve. ukann went without a whole bolt and a ripped upper strut mount for like 4 months. but what im worried is that since your an avid autoxer it might put enough stress on those mounts to eventually crack. under normal driving i would just say go for it...but since you are putting a strut bar on those mounts they will be under alot of increased stress.

after a few autox's and after this winter...check for cracks around strut area..and save up to get the jdm upper strut mount.

i dont know what that wierd looking seat (the outlined one's) purpose is. the spring is sitting inside the circular seat. granted, the honda engineers probably put it there for a purpose, but i dont see what that would be. the circular seat looks as if it would absorb all of the lateral stresses of the spring and shock. i think the thing that is getting in the way is ment to act as a support of the sheet metal around where the springs actually are set (if that makes sense). if you were to cut it i dont think you would make it that worse, maybe you could just cut enough metal away to fit a bolt head in that space. are there any low profile bolts that you can feed from the wheel well side up into the hood? is there enough space to try that?

i took the matter into my own hands. hahaha. me and jeremy (RU NEON) spend quite SOME time getting this sucker on.

long story short..... it's on my car. it did require removing the entire front suspension components (double wishbone, woot!) and some lil' bit o' bump and grindin'..... plus.... it was hard to line up the the strut bar to the bolts....

it was a bitch! the only way i will convince myself that it's worth it is if i do real well in auto-x tommorow.

pix....

I would have bought the $30 bar and it would have bolted right onto the existing bolts...and been chrizzome!!!
