Default 98 GMC Jimmy power loss

I have a 98 GMC Jimmy and around 60ish the car completely dies like it's having trouble turning the block over. It also does this when going up an incline in any gear. It also dies if I pull off from a light sometimes droping to about 100rpm and sputting then going fine. Just started today. I tryed checking codes but can't find a site with a list. I'm totally lost.

Is there a way for me to check codes without a diagnostic machine. My friend was talking about me ground A and B port with a paper clip or something. How does this work.

When you ground with a paperclip its hard as shit to read the codes. You have to watch the check engine light and count the flashes. Its like decoding a fucking morse code or something. If you are around Norfolk today give me a call and ill bring my laptop. I can scan, read PCM, and probably see exactly whats going on. Ill PM you my number.

or you buy an obd2 scanner for 100 bucks and do it yourself, saves time

anyway, my dad has a 96 jimmy that sometimes strains, it makes a louder noise than normal like it's straining...only sometimes, not all the time...the check engine light isn't on...

does that sound like your problem, because we can't figure it out>?
