Default Working on a FD3S. Need a couple opinions/input.

RX7forums.com is down for right so I decided I would try to see what everyone thinks here.

I'm working on a guy's modified 1993 RX-7.

Mods are a FMIC, single turbo super T70, 40mm wastegate, 3" straight exhaust, engine is ported with 3mm seals, and a standalone EMS (haltech E6K).

The problems were she didn't even turn over.

I discovered these problems.
-3 large vacuum leaks
-10+ small vacuum leaks
-O2 sensor not connected to anything
-bad wiring/grounding
-poor battery terminals
-a small battery (could use a more powerful one)
-the "oil injection" lines saw no vacuum when they should
-completely blown turbo gasket

I solved all the vacuum leaks, bad wiring/grounds, terminals, battery, "oil injection" lines. So all I need to do is wire the O2 sensor into the Haltech E6K wiring harness and replace the turbo gasket. I figured with this all done the car should at least start up. Well the engine turns over fine... I'm getting fuel and compression (the engine is not blown).

Now what I havn't checked yet is spark. The car is a mess full of wires so it was kind of hard to check the coils because it sits underneath the upper intake manifold (which you have to remove to get to).

The current owner told me that in order for his car to start sometimes in the past someone had to jump his car through jumper cables while revving their engine high. Now what makes sense to me is that would create much more amperage in the lines creating a stronger spark. I'm assuming that this car has a very weak spark right now considering that after cranking the engine on and off for a period of 30 minutes or more, the engine didn't build a bit of heat (like a normal rotary would as long as a little spark was occurring within the engine).

So although this seems obvious to me that it's definitely an ignition issue versus anything else, I'd figure I'd ask to see if anyone has any decent ideas onto why the engine is failing to start or sputter up.

I will check Thursday on the spark & coils and update what I've found.

This car is a beautiful FD which is a shame it doesn't run. Hopefully I can have it done by next week.

I would first recomend to see if the plugs are fould. Also use a spark tester to see how good the spark is. What compression readings are you getting? Are you doing a new instal of the Haltech or was it already done? If already done is the map any good in it, is it dumping to much or too little fuel? Are you getting power to the ignighter? The list goes on, PM me if I can be of any help.

The plugs are new, but they may have been fouled in the past month.

I have not tested compression, but I can hear the compression. The "choo choo" noise you get from a rotary when the compression is good. I know this isn't a surefire answer, but it's an easy way to check.

I will check the igniters very soon.

The car smells a bit rich, but that's typical for a RX-7. I tried removing the fuse for the ecu so that no fuel would inject and it could rid itself of any excess fuel. That didn't work.

I will see how it all turns out tomorrow. Thanks.

I'm repairing this FD and getting paid for it.

BTW, the monthly payments are not much at all on the SRT-4.

i had pretty much all the same problems. vacumm leaks were fixed and full tune up (i mean everything helped out). but i would recomend fabricated a tray and running the battery in the trunk. go with an optima. not much help i know but the battery is always a good idea

Check ALL of you grounds.

Double check all of your grounds.

Then go back and wirebrush/file all of your grounds.

Have you swapped in a known good ignition system?

Scratch it all now.

I found out the engine has a blown inner coolant seal... it's blown pretty fucking bad too.

Scratch this project. Period. Haha. Typical rotary.
