You can tell them you were using it for navigation...or bring it to court and show them the program you were running. Those are pretty much you only 2 chances of getting out of the ticket.

I was monitoring the vehicle though.. I would assume if there are laws regarding who is allowed to use diagnostic/scan tool equipment, then obviously they are legal to use for those allowed?

No...its for going back and pulling data fromt the vehicle. Not real time scanning....its like black boxes to tell if people are beating on your car and shit like that.

That is the law that allows vehicle repair techs (usually from dealerships) to go down the road on diagnostic evaluations with their equipment.

A lawyer will cost you $300-400. Cite that regulation when you go to court, the charge will be dropped.

Ok enough about the laptop ticket, you will never get out of it. They see it as if you are looking down in the passenger seat you can't see the road. Next time if your data logging put on the passenger side floor facing away from you.

Now the exhaust ticket I see your in Fredericksburg. What county did you get the ticket? Fairfax I bet.

He's from fburg but he's gonna drive a car on 4 hoosiers all the way up to Fairfax?

If the judge has an ounce of neuron firing capability he will easily get out of the laptop ticket. The cop basically gave him an invalid ticket. If you can comprehend the law you will understand that his ticket is not applicable to what his dell computer actually was doing at the time of the incident.

I'm from Fburg and I drove to Fairfax on 4 Yokohama's every day for 9 years, it's where the money's at. There are plenty of people in Fburg that drive all the way to DC every day. If your working in Fburg that means your most likely your making less than $15 an hour.
I can tell by alot of the comments that you guys hav'nt been to trafic court recently. And no the judges don't have any neurons firing at all especially in Fairfax county. I got 2 illegal exhaust tickets in one month! I even told the second cop I already had a ticket for it, and told him according to the VA code it was not illegal (here's a tip never quote the law to a cop) he said it was and I told him I have a copy of it in the back of my car and I could show it to him. Then he got really pissed and they searched around my whole car trying to find something wrong and when they did'nt he just wrote me another exhaust ticket! I went to court with pics and documents that mr OBX exhaust was made for my car only and not a universal fart can peice of crap. But according to the judge if you own a Honda you must go to Honda dealer to get your muffler. I all so noticed that if you don't have a lawyer with you the judge won't listen to a thing you say. So pretty much if you drive through Fairfax and your muffler is shiney you will get a ticket! Since I worked up there and had to drive up there I got a Flowmaster because it's flat black and looks just like stock. Fairfax is real bad on any import cars, dos'nt matter whose drivining it! And for the record I'm 40yrs old married, 4 kids and a grandson but I drive a 91 Honda CRX SI with Konig Freefall wheels and Yokohama tires. But all the cops see is a street racer!
My advice is if it's in Fairfax it's not worth going to court. You will be just be wasting your time and the 2 tickets are not enough to go and get a lawyer for. If a 40yrs old family man with a folder full of documentation can't get out of it, you probally won't either. And if you are under 30 all he is going to see is a street racer! And if you try to use the "data logging" defense to him you will just be proving to him your a street racer!
