i lived in nova for 16 years, and mostly grew up in the mount vernon area, in sequoyah actually. while i lived there i have seen and been through alot of things. i've seen people hanging around in the parks selling drugs in the middle of the night, to seeing a rec. center worker getting jumped by 5 older teens just beacuse he was different skin color then everyone in the building. things had gotten so bad that they ended up turning the community center into a sub police station.
I moved here from Vermont. It's ridiculous that people can't drive in a little bit of rain or snow. Every time it snows I ride down 28 and see a couple SUV's on the side of the road after an accident. Cell phone use is out of control too. I tried to determine what percentage of drivers were on their cell phones one day, and that day it seemed that 1 out of 3 drivers were on the phone. Today I got cut off by a damn 745 without a signal... it's hard to signal with a cell phone in one hand. It's also true that people can't stay in their lanes. This is especially true during turns, but some people never drive in the center of the lane to begin with. I didn't see this mentioned in this thread, but people here can't merge either. A lot of drivers are so timid, and so afraid to use the accelerator to get up to speed that they wont merge until there is a huge gap in traffic... so I'm always behind them getting annoyed because they pass up like 4-5 decent gaps. I find it especially annoying when they drive a fast car slowly.
As for immigration, we need to completely change the policy. There are too many families here that feel a greater connection with the country they left than with the country giving them the opportunity to create the life style they wanted when they immigrated. If you want to become a citizen of this country, then you should put this country first. And if you aren't willing to come here legally, then don't expect any help, or for anyone to deal with you. Instead, expect us to pick you up and deport you.
Maybe we can learn something from France's problems with immigrants. Too bad this country never seems to learn much from what takes place outside its borders.

i also can't stand the butheads who ride the merge lane to the end instead of merging into an open spot behind someone because they have the mentality of "i've got to get in front of them".
the only time i don't let ppl merge in is when i see them in my side/rear view mirror go from the travel lane into the merge lane just to try and get futher ahead in the BUMPER TO BUMPER traffic. great job f'n up the traffic even more, morons!!!
(sorry the last one is a BIG pet peeve of mine)*EDIT* there is a huge problem with the illegals here in NoVa, PW County has the largest salvadorian population in all of NoVa. which in turn also gives it the largest ms13 population as well. did anyone else catch the news report on this about 5-6 months ago?
i can almost see why they try to come here as an illegal, my wife is from the philippines and she has a son over there. i have been trying to get him here since april of 2001. well almost 5 yrs later and $6k he should be here by mid december, i hope. that is unless they can think of some other way to squeeze more $ out of me.

You should have been taught that you don't drive in the merge lane unless need to be and when you see people merging you move over. It's proper etiquette and makes more sense.
Now obliviously you should know that this doesn't apply when the roads are backed up, but when cruising you should. I can't recall how many times I would be merging onto the Beltway or 66 and have to practically come to a complete stop because people hang out in the merge lane or can't get to speed.
This is just one unwritten rules I see not followed at all around here. Along with the hanging out in the left lane and not moving over when somebody is going faster than you in the left lane.
I just got back from driving to Philly and NYC. You know what, all the problems I had with driving was people with Virginia plates or when I returned to Virginia. Pretty pathetic, but Virginia has to rank up there as having some of the worst drivers.

I made the mistake of leaving to Pennsylvania one afternoon at like 5ish. I hit VAs rush hr...then moved into MD and hit their rush hr...and caught the last part of PA's rush.....Geez us....god i hate the state but love it at the same time. Born and raised in NOVA

BItch was backed up past there....got to the interchange, passed it and then it was free. No accidents, no bad weather...no nothing....juss people who cant merge. It seems as if when one person brakes....EVERYONE has to brake. And the people i hate the most are the ones that force their way in front of you and cause you to slam the brakes. Like theyll creep out into your lane and then just gas it and cut you off and make you brake hard as shit. Like wtf...GOD! i used to drive auto and was excited once i got stick....F*ck manual transmissions in VA....lol.....just makes it a bitch to get through traffic.

The times I have had problems is when I first got to the area and when I'm trying to get off the damn highway.
