I'm not sure of the reasonas to why the Japs did it, but the USDM engine puts out right at 300hp, as compared to the JDMs 280. From what I understand, the US model has slightly larger turbos and a different cam profile and duration (how long the valves stay open). So yes, you're right when you said they have less boost from the factory. But they also have a slightly different cam profile.

Old Post - You in the military or just relocate? Because your plates are California...

Hmm... I did some checking on that car... and I'm going to have to call BS on that being "your" Z... I spoke with Mike Lee about his Z, which is shown in the photos above... He still owns it, and he still lives in Orange County, CA. All the info is you listed is a direct copy from his "Rides" page on TT.Net...

TTcainZ's Rides Page On TT.Net

So unless you have a more current photo... in a local spot... or some other way to substantiate you actually own that Z... stop saying its yours because its rather pathetic, and an insult to the owner.

Ever notice how most japanese supercars are rated at 276hp or 280hp? I read it a long time ago but it has something to do with the japanese government and auto makers having a "getlemans agreement" to keep hp levels to a maximum of 276hp. Didnt know the Z was like that too but Ive always noticed the Skyline was.

And ummm...This should be quite interesting with the Z "owners" situation

Yeah, the Z was actually detuned to 280hp by lowering the boost. It had only 7-8psi of boost, vs the US 10.5psi. US models had an extra "boost jet" that restricted flow to increase boost. Also, the Japanese engines had what we would consider Automatic Versions of the Cams & Turbos (US Automatic TTs had only 280HP, but produced 10.5psi of boost). Basically the Auto Cams/Turbos give quicker acceleration/spool, but they fizzle out a little quicker on the top end.

Some have disproved the turbo rumor (showing Japanese imported motors have the same turbos as US 5spd manual equipped TTs) but the cams have not been proven/disproven. Its found in literature, but no one has taken the time to check the lift/duration on the two cams to make sure.

And I didn't mean to start a controversy over the photos, but come on fasterzx, I mean if its not your car own up... you could say you'd LIKE IT to maybe be that way one day... like you're aspiring... but don't say its yours... that's just plain sad. =( Its done all the time and its a real shame.

But chidoks, if you ever have any Z questions, hit me up on IM I'd be more than happy to answer your questions... or check out TwinTurbo.Net, specifically the Tech Section. Its a wealth of knowledge.

Oh and fasterzx, you also mentioned the following:

For one, HKS does NOT use TD series turbos... they use Garett GT series turbos. GReddy uses the TD series. GReddy has a TD04, TD05, and multiple TD06 kits for the Z.

Stock turbos are good to 19psi with Race Fuel. However, stock 370cc injectors max out their duty cycle at 17psi, and thus should not be run higher than 16psi on 93 octane.

Please don't give advice when you have no idea what you're talking about...

However, your suggestions below:

Both TT.Net and the Boost Controller were good suggestions... though 'f s t caz' had already mentioned TT.Net above, but you did obviously know about the site having plagiarized Mike Lee's Zs info and pictures from the site... but in refernce to you tuning comment... you cannot tune anything with a boost controller... you can increase and decrease the boost, but that doesn't do anything. You can however tune the fuel curve using an AFC, which is a good idea on a Z, especially with a JWT Stage III ECU... but again, please do not give advice unless you know what you're talking about.

Later,
