I don't think that more HP is the goal. I think they're going for an all around better car.
I think the point is that you're shaving off hundreds of lbs and in the process attaining a better weight balance.
That or they're just aiming for bragging rights.

if you want to drop a motor in a miata that isn't exactly practical and still have a cool factor, drop a 20b in the bitch, i'm sure they car rev to at least 10k, but i'm not up to date on my rotaries. but i do recall some 1,500hp+ 20b motors..
